The Analytical Side of Media

Research and Data Analysis in Film Studies

I began developing strong analytical and organizational skills through a series of academic projects and independent studies. I am currently participating in the Chinese-language Movie Research Lab, where I sorted a variety of online databases (such as Hong Kong Film Database, Baidu, Google) for cross-validation to ensure the accuracy of multilingual movie data, and visualized it on the Nodegoat platform to show the relationships between theaters, movies, and production companies. This process strengthened my ability in data collection, cleaning, organization, and visualization, and laid a solid foundation for analyzing complex economic or cultural datasets.

Independent Research and Interdisciplinary Perspectives

On this basis, in my ongoing independent research on Xuzhou STO Express, a regional delivery company in China, I designed a mixed-methods case study that integrates interviews, questionnaires, and industry data to examine how digitalization has influenced the firm’s operational efficiency, organizational structure, and local competitiveness. In this research, I learned how to design survey instruments, code qualitative responses, and interpret data patterns within broader economic contexts.

In addition, I can approach complex issues from cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. In addition to my Economics major, I also minored in East Asian studies, taking courses in film, culture, psychology, and music. This diverse academic experience can be integrated into research designs.

For example, in my independent research on Japanese ramen, I examined culture and policies to promote ramen as an economic and cultural carrier. From the non-native perspective of my interviewee, a Malaysian chef who has studied ramen in Japan for ten years, I found that “Japanese ramen” has been reshaped in cross-cultural practices. This experience deepened my ability to approach complex issues from multiple cultural and disciplinary perspectives and helped me recognize how economic phenomena are intertwined with social values and cultural exchanges.

Together, these experiences have deepened my technical foundation in research design, data analysis, and visualization.
